“I am interested in this idea of knowledge sharing, the knowledge that is passed down through different genres through different areas of the world,” says artist Ashley Holmes discussing the influence of sound system culture on his thinking. “But also, that its starting point is from Jamaica.” Speaking with associate editor Jared Davis on notions of place, ownership, and Black British experience for AQNB’s bi-monthly Artist Statement podcast, this latest episode with Holmes is available exclusively to subscribers of our Patreon.

Based in Sheffield, Ashley has shown work for the likes of Les Urbaines festival, Lausanne, Jerwood Arts, London, Two Queens, Leicester, and is the host of the monthly experimental radio programme Tough Matter on NTS. His work examines themes of collectivity, memory and public address, as explored most recently in his solo show A Free Moment at Prague’s FUTURA gallery.
