A Free Moment, a solo exhibition by Ashley Holmes, was on at Prague’s FUTURA, running February 26 to May 31.
With angular furniture and tinted lighting surrounding a prominent speaker system, the empty nightclub-like space invites solo contemplation of an audio piece made in collaboration with Joseph Bond, in which the sonic signifiers of sound system culture are disassembled. Through distant-sounding samples and ambient washes the piece demonstrates in Holmes’ words “what happens when the rhythmic work is attached to something with no anchor,” creating an abstracted, hauntological reflection of place and memory heard in this case through Black British music histories.**
