“To me, understanding oneself as interconnected with the wider environment and each other has always been about this shift in subjectivity beyond individualism and anthropocentrism,” says artist Jenna Sutela, on how her practice addresses culturally prescribed understandings of other organisms. Talking with associate editor Jared Davis about cognition, technology and our interconnectedness with the wider environment for AQNB’s bi-monthly Artist Statement podcast, this latest episode with Sutela is available exclusively to subscribers of our Patreon.

Originally from Finland and now based in Berlin, Sutela’s work has been shown at the likes of Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Tokyo’s Museum of Contemporary Art, and Serpentine Galleries in London. She has also released an LP in 2019 via Berlin’s PAN. Sutela called in to discuss topics ranging from the gut-brain connection, artificial intelligence, slime moulds, and how “our brain is not the limit of consciousness.”
