“A real job. Do you know how many fucking jobs I’ve had?” moans Dasha Nekrasova in a film called Wobble Palace. The New York-based actor rolls her eyes, while listing a long list of side hustle gigs before ending on, “and, of course, the one job I’ve made no money off of, being an artist.” The short excerpt was screened alongside other video and readings by Martin Kohout, Cheon Pyo Lee and Al Bedell at New York’s Mathew Gallery last year, for a panel hosted by Steph Kretowicz called Content Prole: What’s a Career?’.

You can listen to the recording in full here:

The live event accompanied the Content Prole: A journey into the depths of the online gig economy broadcast series — produced by AQNB in collaboration with Matthew O’Shannessy — and included a conversation between these artists and writers about their own experiences with the often harsh realities of trying to sustain a practice as a working creative.

It happened alongside the Montez Press Radio summer residency program, which ran July 19 to August 19, 2018, and included an impressive list of contributors, including Hard to ReadNYC Trans Oral History ProjectMELA FoundationTriple CanopyBerlin Community Radio. After a successful follow-up from an RV at the New York Art Book Fair in September and a takeover on Food Radio in November, 2018, Montez Press Radio is returning this year for a fourth edition at their original Chinatown location. Tune in.**

Montez Press Radio is broadcasting from New York’s 46 Canal Street, running January 24 to 27, 2019.
