Steven Warwick and DeForrest Brown Jr. presented Elevator to Mezzanine at New York’s Issue Project Room on September 23.
The event is part of DeForrest Brown Jr.’s project as the 2017 Suzanne Fiol Curatorial Fellow, in collaboration with Berlin-based artist and musician Steven Warwick (aka Heatsick). Proposing itself as a ‘war on style,’ E-M defines itself as a cataloguing space and a focus group which uses performance, installation and sound design to explore “play-as-platform” through a “flat non-space and its orbiting culture of collapsing economies and corroding identities.”
The event featured Warwick performing from his Nadir (2016) release, as well as his bed-sheet reading ‘Can’t Be Arsed’ from recent past solo exhibition Neutral (2016) at Berlin’s Exile. Exploring ‘placelessness’ and ’emotional disaffection,’ Warwick also recently published Fear Indexing the X-Files (2017) with Nora Khan by Primary Information.
The performance-installation also featured Voice Training (Jaclyn Miller), Stacy Lynn Smith, Ilya Lipkin and Enver Hadzijaj, as well as sourced audio from cellist Lori Goldston.
The next Elevator to Mezzanine event will take the form of an exhibition at New York’s Cleopatra opening October 8 and running to October 15.
