Alien myths, overlapping histories & skewed chronologies in the ceramic & textile works of Afra Eisma & Susan Kooi at Kyoto’s Garden Lab

Utsuro Bune, a duo exhibition by Afra Eisma and Susan Kooi, curated by Yoriko Ishizawa, took place at Kyoto’s Garden Lab on March 26.

With ceramic and textile works set amongst a traditional Kyoto townhouse, show was inspired by a 19th century extraterrestrial encounter in Japan, in which fishermen were reported to have discovered a hollow water vessel filled with strange texts and an alien woman with whom they couldn’t communicate. Incorporating this local myth along with crafts and mementos from the artists’ three week trip in Japan, the exhibition creates a playful and surreal landscape of overlapping histories and skewed chronologies.**
