Beneath the music from a farther room, a solo exhibition by manuel arturo abreu, was on show at AB Lobby Gallery, Portland State University, between May 6 and 24.
With sculpture, video, sound and printed matter, the exhibition quietly uses visual poetry to explore musicality, abstraction and language. Die-cut vinyl on the gallery window ornately depicts musically notated silence, an audio mixer as sculpture creates ‘no-input’ noise by feeding its own signal back into itself, organic and inorganic matter such as stones, chicken bones and detritus are used in works throughout the gallery. In these fleeting assemblages, the artist uses “what is at hand in a process of magical thinking, with attention to ritual aspects of aesthetics.”
