Between gyrating dancers + fatigued mascots: Sinae Yoo explores morally awkward viewing in Guilt Trip at Neumeister Bar-Am

, 5 February 2018

Sinae Yoo presented solo exhibition Guilt Trip at Berlin’s Neumeister Bar-Am which opened November 18, 2017 and ran to February 10.

Yoo, who is based between Seoul and Bern, is a multidisciplinary artist working across installation, sculpture, video and other materials to explore “topics present in daily life and pop culture, always investigating in the relationship between virtual and physical realities.”

Two videos, both titled ‘Dancing Eyes’ are installed in a deep blue lit space. The first video is shown on an ‘oversized intercom interface’ that follows dancers in Seoul hired for the opening of store celebrations as well as ‘fatigued mascots on break.’ The second video appropriates images of convulsing almost dead animals interspersed with scenes from the 1996 arcade game Dancing Eyes, touching on what Ché Zara Blomfield writes in the press release as “a sickening sense of dread that permeates these garishly-colored hyper-commodified bodies, neither dead nor alive.”**
