Between past shame + queer hope: Athena Thebus feels like a puppy in Dreaming About You Woke Me Up at 55 Sydenham Road

, 15 December 2017

Athena Thebus presented solo exhibition Dreaming About You Woke Me Up at Sydney’s 55 Sydenham Rd, which opened October 5 and ran to October 22.

The show was based around a text written by the Sydney-based artist in 2016 and called DOGGY, which assembles “fragments of the times I felt like a dog.” A second wall built into the space with holes uncovers elements, including a small photograph and a piece of cow hide.

Bringing together elements of shame, sexuality, intuition and Kylie Minogue lyrics that “make me feel like a puppy,” the text and responding installation explore shifting moods through a splintered whole. Working across sculpture, installation, and writing, Thebus’ practice is “driven by the desire to generate atmospheres thick with past shame and queer hope.”**
