A training ground for the (re)enactment of reified structures: play + anxiety in Some Me, Into Timeworn Bits at FASTNET

Co-curated by Elizaveta Shneyderman and Gabrielle Jensen, the show includes work by Natalie LabriolaHarley MartellAlexandra MetcalfSydney Shen, and Flannery Silva. Taking place in the shipping container and artist-run space, the works explore ‘transitional objects’ (examples such as playrooms, toys, or cherished trinkets) and how they are invested in “the becoming of a subject.”

The press release takes the form of 14 factual and fragmented sentences that look appropriated from another source, such as “ii. A toy’s material and shape become a story told to its handlers” and “v. Play displaces anxiety for the body. Play is a way to learn nurturing behaviors, but is also a training ground for the (re)enactment of reified structures: I am learning to be a Daddy.”**

The Some Me, Into Timeworn Bits group exhibition is on at Brooklyn’s FASTNET, running June 25 to July 9, 2017.
