Mickey Mahar is presenting performance ’10 Minutes at 6Month Space’ at New York’s 6Month Space on June 24 and 25.
Described as a “site-specific situation” and “largely a piece of fan fiction”, the artist-oriented space will host Mahar’s first foray into performance, where he alters his surroundings to create an immersive event comprised of “intensely familiar objects, narratives, and sensory experiences”; things that comfort the artist and dancer as he enters the unfamiliar terrain of authoring a performance.
Mahar —who notably performed with Miguel Gutierrez for ‘Age & Beauty Part 1: Mid-Career Artist/Suicide Note or &:-/‘ at the Whitney Biennial in 2014 —explores narrative as “a form of obsession and self-care”. In playing with and confusing the logic of “dance in the gallery”, as well as presenting an intentionally transient work that contrasts with his laboured installation, the artist encourages viewers to “consider how one chooses to spend time, and the amount of time it takes to complete any one task.”
