The weekend symposium brings a handful of talks, performances and interventions, opening up discussion about the vulnerability, sentimentality and honesty within the context of relationships, inspired by the greater exhibition, which was in turn inspired by a Donald Barthelme short story by the same name.
Starting off the weekend is a presentation of a new text by Claire Potter, followed by a spoken word projected showreel by Matthew McQuillan, a recorded presentation by Hannah Black, Adrian Rifkin‘s ‘Towards the gay bodyguard, or some notes on method’, and a conversation with Nina Wakeford about history, memory, and sentimentality.
The symposium’s second day brings Alison Ballance‘s presentation of ‘Said’ using firsthand accounts by women and Ursula Le Guin’s science fiction novel ‘The Dispossessed’ as starting points, a reading of and discussion about Barthelme’s aforementioned short story, a presentation by JL Murtaugh, a revisitation of the ‘part failure’ of his performance ‘Upward Infliction’ by Ciarán Ó Dochartaigh, and a final presentation by Daniel Lichtman about his encounter with Brooklyn’s law enforcement.
