Why are women so irresistibly attracted to shoes? With heels, ballerina style, platforms, moccasins, espadrilles… the king of accessories and the very essence of seduction & coquetry. But for Karen, the main character of  Hans Christian Andersen’s The Red shoes (one of his best-known classics), this unexpected gift will be her ruin.

After being adopted by a rich lady Karen becomes obsessed with a pair of red dancing shoes; without her adoptive mother’s consent she decides to buy herself the red shiny pair changing and destroying her life forever.

Impedimenta publishing house have asked Spanish illustrator (and heavily b&w&red obsessed) Sara Morante to collaborate in the re-edition of the classic and add not only an exquisite illustrative touch but to re-orientate the tale artwork for an adult audience, just like the story was originally conceived back in the 19th century as a critic of the puritan Danish society.

An edition that for now will remain published for the Spanish market-only (15,60 €) and will be presented @ Fnac Castellana in central Madrid next Saturday by editor Enrique Redel & illustrator Sara Morante. So if you pass by….
