The Red shoes

13 December 2011

Why are women so irresistibly attracted to shoes? With heels, ballerina style, platforms, moccasins, espadrilles… the king of accessories and the very essence of seduction & coquetry. But for Karen, the main character of  Hans Christian Andersen’s The Red shoes (one of his best-known classics), this unexpected gift will be her ruin.

After being adopted by a rich lady Karen becomes obsessed with a pair of red dancing shoes; without her adoptive mother’s consent she decides to buy herself the red shiny pair changing and destroying her life forever.

Impedimenta publishing house have asked Spanish illustrator (and heavily b&w&red obsessed) Sara Morante to collaborate in the re-edition of the classic and add not only an exquisite illustrative touch but to re-orientate the tale artwork for an adult audience, just like the story was originally conceived back in the 19th century as a critic of the puritan Danish society.
