Sydney-based artist Brian Fuata will be staging a performance as part of Chisenhale Gallery’s 21st Century Programme on July 23.

The new semi-improvisational work, which has Fuata using “the figure of the ghost as a strategy for exploring the conventions of performance”, was informed by text generated through collaborations, online correspondences, and intimate conversations.

The result is an interaction between text and performance as “cooperative forms that exist laterally, feeding into each other”. The press release introduces it like this: “During the event Fuata describes the process as it occurs, using the audience’s anticipation and expectation of what might occur in a gallery, to make apparent the nature of performativity. In this way the making of the performance is the performance itself.” The event is followed by a conversation with the writer and curator, Pip Wallis.
