AQNB released its fourth music and arts compendium Heavenly Creatures on March 23, with preview track’ oakscreen – hibernate’ premiering today. The artist is one of the few members of the helix tears collective that have contributed to the project, amongst other musicians like BLOODZ BOI 血男孩, reserv, lei, and more.
This past year, oakscreen has offered a pensive inflection to the sound of vanguardists characterizing online pop music. His productions– notably on d0llywood1‘s ‘no regrets’ and blackwinterwells‘ ‘slip loop’– hint at a lofi-inspired world, abundant with acoustic and analog-synth atmospheres that rupture over subdued beats. It’s a gentle and reflective side of the hype, a style initially established on solo works like ‘in my head’ that has since encompassed more attitudes and helped define a scene at-large.
‘hibernate’ wavers between melancholy and mania, jumping into detuned electronics as the artist mutters lines like “separation isn’t bad if you ask me.” The composition builds up; airy overtones glide over field recordings assembled into snappy percussion before crashing down in a glitched-out haze.**
