There’s nothing as powerful as a Malian protest song, nothing as melodic and certainly nothing as catchy. Mamani Keita’s joins the ever-increasing list of world renown Mali musicians (VieuxFarka…) with her 3rd album (2nd as a solist) “Gagner l’argent Francais” (earn French money) just released under French mini-label No Format! and produced once again by Nicolas Repac.

Probably better known for her soundtrack contribution to the French animated film Kirikou et les bêtes sauvages Mamani talks in her new album about the always difficult immigration phenomenon in southern Europe. For many African immigrants now living in Europe (in this case focusing in France) their main source of revenues comes from small painful jobs (construction, catering, house cleaning…). A message clearly directed to the African youth trying to demonstrate that Europe is no “El Dorado” and it may be worth giving it a couple of thoughts before risking everything for a dangerous trip to the continent.

In Mali the tradition bans women named “Keita” from playing any instrument or singing. Thank god there are a few exceptions like Mamaniwho’s quickly become one of the main ambassadors of contemporary African music.  The album can be streamed on No Format! record’s page.

And as a gift here’s a remix by Cosmo Vitelli (he’s still alive!) for the single…
