After 2 years in the pipe and now that it’s grabbing some attention Chromaroma ( in public beta since last Dec.) is ready to make us all play with the city (how many initiatives like this have we heard about…?), but with our travel cards rather than our phones…

Chromaroma is an initiative by Mudlark which tracks & shows you your movements and location as you swipe your Oyster Card in and out of the Tube (Bus, Tram and Boat coming soon).

“It connects communities of people who cross paths and routes on a regular basis, and encourages people to make new journeys and use public transport in a different way by exploring new areas and potentially using different modes of public transport”.

What the guys from Mudlark haven’t pointed out is that there’s no need for a game to “explore” new routes of public transport… our major & friend Boris and the tfl team already close the tube lines every weekend in a different way so we’re all forced to “discover” alternative routes.

At its simplest, Chromaroma is about amassing the most points possible. By watching your own travel details you can investigate interesting new ways to travel and exciting new destinations in order to get more points. Grab “multipliers” and bonus points by working with a team, building up connections with fellow passengers and discovering mysteries that are attached to locations on your routes.

How does it work?

You only have to be an Oyster card holder and give permission to the chromaroma platform (once registered) to access your data, then you’re ready & set to go.

Every station is part of a Collection. Completing a Collection earns you a considerable amount of points. There are collections for each Line on the Underground, each Borough of London, each letter of the alphabet and many more. Once you visit a station, Collections that contain that station are started automatically.

Then you have the missions (like “visit this place or this park before a deadline using this path or route”). Some missions unlock hidden missions, and all completed missions give you points.

And the best bit obviously is playing for a team, there are currently 4 (blue, green, yellow, red) which you choose for a season (3 months), the aim is to capture stations that you visit that count towards your team’s overall ownership of the entire city…. just like on Unreal tournament but without the shooting (boo).

In addition to these, there are also point enhancing Achievements…. ok ok, it’s getting complicated with all these options & possibilities, but in the end is all about travelling….  and look! the green team it’s going to win this winter… even if they’re not the team with most members!! Bastards!

More info on their website, or also on Mudlark’s site, so go on! play! and don’t forget to enjoy!
