Dunk

I was so looking forward to buy this model of Nike Dunk, and then realized is made out of piled skateboards…anyhow Nike should reconsider actually manufacturing such a stripped model….

Japanese artist Haroshi (Harvest) created this model as part of his exhibition Skate & Destroy in Tokyo which took place earlier this year @ the Plsmis gallery.

The Dunk, was built from the actual used skateboards from NIKE’s pro riders (P-ROD, LANCE MOUNTAIN, ERIC KOSTON, CORY KENNEDY, JUSTIN BROCK, BRIAN ANDERSON, DARYL ANGEL, DANIEL SHIMIZU, ELISSA STEAMER, CHET CHILDRESS, GRANT TAYLOR, HUNTER MURAIRA), as well his own.

“The right-foot Dunk was modeled after my own worn pair. I ride in regular-stance, and had tried to the best of my abiity to faithfully replicate every little detail of the well-worn sneaker. Because I truly believe that a sneaker like Dunk SB should not merely be collected as a fashion accessory, it deserves to be used, and should be worn down by the skateboarder.” (more images on his blog).

Hiroshe created a series of playful artworks making use of old skateboards and broken decks, not just baskets…

Being a skter all his works have a very personal perspective… “As a skater, I want to take responsibility of reusing skateboards when they were no longer useable. Also, as an artist I want to explore the possibilities of what can be done with skateboards.

We see the care and effort that a skater can have for his/her deck and we also acknowledge the origins of a skateboard. We believe that if the small things we do can connect to sustainability then we’re doing something right. We’d be satisfied in our effort when people look at products and start thinking of ways to recycle.”

Unfortunately the exhibition is over, but the guys @ Slamxhype wrote an article about it.
