Inaugurating new category with a great artist & brain: Jared Tarbell… the guy behind Etsy & one of the kings of Flash nowadays….

Born in 1973 to William and Suzon Davis Tarbell in the high altitude desert city of Albuquerque, New Mexico, he was first introduced to personal computers in 1987. His interest in computation has grown in direct relation to the processing power of these machines.

Described as “one part Magical Mystery Tour (Lennon/McCartney), one part Brandenburg Concerto (J.S. Bach), and one part Somnium (Robert Rich)” Jared constantly researching ways of creating new tools & forms with his computer software through recursion inspired by nature’s magical shapes. As he puts it…

I write computer programs to create graphic images.  With an algorithmic goal in mind, I manipulate the work by finely crafting the semantics of each program. Specific results are pursued, although occasionally surprising discoveries are made. I believe all code is dead unless executing within the computer. For this reason I distribute the source code of my programs in modifiable form. Modifications and extensions of these algorithms are encouraged.

Jared holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from New Mexico State University. In June 2005, Jared co-founded Etsy.com, an online marketplace to buy and sell all things handmade; he’s also behind Levitated studio and “Complexification” where you’ll find many of his “programmed” works.

His code is openly available for download, if you dare to play with mighty maths!

Jared lives and works from his remote desert studio compound in northern New Mexico. When not engaged in the art of computer programming, he nearly always tries to find himself outside, exploring the mysterious wilderness ares of the southwest United States.

He’ll be coming in September to Flash on the Beach (Brighton – UK) and we’ll be there to listen to him. In the meanwhile… enjoy his works:
