Philipp Timischl presents Hostile Habits Domestic Monuments, Class Drag at Galerie Emanuel Layr, Mar 28 – May 27

28 March 2017

Philipp Timischl is presenting solo exhibition Hostile Habits Domestic Monuments, Class Drag at Vienna’s Galerie Emanuel Layr, opening March 28 and running to May 27.

The Vienna-based artist explores normalised masculinity and heterogeneity as represented on screen through a multimedia practice, spanning sculpture, painting, photography and video. Interrogating representations of queerness and contemporary gay culture in mainstream media, and particularly its “reliance on heteronormative terminology and traditions,” Timischil’s work explores gender and sexuality through the lens of mainstream media.

There will be an official after party at Vienna’s Kiss Bar with Croy Nielsen.

Lena Henke, Lisa Holzer, + Margaret Raspé @ Galerie Emanuel Layr, Sep 8 – Nov 11

7 September 2016

Lena HenkeLisa Holzer, and Margaret Raspé are presenting joint exhibition Fever at Vienna’s Galerie Emanuel Layr, opening September 8 and running to November 11.

Curated by _Vienna 2016 and Kari Rittenbach, the exhibition includes new works by the three artists. The exhibition text refers to Prometheus’ “reckless gift to mankind”, one that ensured “never-ending torment, and the invention of civilization as we know it”. It also looks at the ancient Greek root of economics, ‘oikos’ — or “hearth and home”, in relation to the “concept of social reproduction as women’s work in particular (within the patriarchy of Western capitalism)”.

The text further states there are still “plenty of (weak) metaphors for tending to the home fires, an expression which is sometimes taken to mean sustained passion – or maybe: sex”.  It alludes to physical ailments and shame, being other reasons that might cause passion or “the body to burn” enough to lead to —a fever.

Lili Reynaud-Dewar @ Galerie Emanuel Layr, Apr 15 – Jun 4

12 April 2016

Lili Reynaud-Dewar is presenting a solo show, Safe Space, at Vienna’s Galerie Emanuel Layr opening April 15 and running June 4.

There is little information on the show itself but French-born Reynaud-Dewar recently presented with the gallery in New York’s Independent Art Fair, showing 12 silk scarfs with printed text on love, sex, risk and vulnerability. The artist has spent the past year with a series of works under the umbrella title, ‘My Epidemic’ featuring a book of texts on her work and the work of other artists, a performance called ‘small modest bad blood opera’, and a day ‘teaching Bjarne Melgaard’s class’, all of which are now accessible through a series of documentation photographs that carry a continued recognisable aesthetic.

Reynaud-Dewar works often to blur her the identity as well as re-investigating and remembering large moments in history that once touched her personally.

See the Galerie Emanuel Layr website for (limited) details.**
