Sorbus @ SIC Gallery, Jun 10 – Jul 27

8 June 2016

Sorbus will present exhibition Fucked Up in a Bad Way at SIC Gallery, opening June 10 and running July 27.

The show is part of an exhibition exchange between the two Helsinki spaces. SIC will simultaneously curate an exhibition at Sorbus, which is run by collective members Otto Byström, Henna Hyvärinen, Jonna Karanka, Sakari Tervo, and Tuomo Tuovinen.

The press release includes two quotes that talk of the death of punk and alternative culture, and of the usefulness if humans could distill alcohol in their bodies in the cold and dark times, like the crucian carp fish found at the bottom of anoxic seas. The trailer for the exhibition (below) features a startup group that plans to use the alcohol produced by the Northern European as a business enterprise.

Vibes @ SIC Space, Feb 6 – 22

5 February 2015

Helsinki’s SIC contemporary art space is hosting the latest project from the Vibes collective in the form of a site-specific installation that will run from February 6 to 22.

Vibes describes itself as a “total, perennial piece and collective”, comprised of both its founding members – Ville Ahonen, Laura Birn, Anna-Mari Karvonen, Anni Puolakka, Ville Seppänen, Heidi Soidinsalo, and Masi Tiitta – as well as their friends and guest contributors. Their work consists of a series of installations, texts, ‘situations’, and one-off performances, celebrating, as they say, “carpe diem and commitment”.

For their run at SIC, seven members – including Birn, Puolakka, Seppänen and Soidinsalo, as well as Aarne Tapola, Tuomas Skopa, and Martti Tervo – collaborate to create a world “inside a cloud, amongst a group of creatures who have surrendered to the idea that life and art are about being lost, following one’s instincts and sharing journeys and picnics, joys and sorrows”.

Using Picasso’s play, ‘Desire Caught by the Tail’ (1944) as its inspiration, Vibes’ installation personifies Picasso’s themes, obscuring itself in surreality in order to elucidate meaning.

Emily Jones + Jenna Sutela @ SIC Space, Sep 25 – Oct 6

23 September 2014

Finland’s SIC Space will be hosting the two-person exhibition, Ophelia, featuring artists Emily Jones and Jenna Sutela at the Helsinki space from September 25 to October 5.

The collaborative show focusses in on themes of water and identity fluidity, using the following quote as a starting point for the exhibition: “Character: a universal substance, a transparent fluid, a compound of hydrogen and oxygen, the sea, rain, saliva, etc.”

Helsinki-based writer and artist Sutela will present an audio play and installation titled ‘New Degrees of Freedom, Act 3: Water‘ (2014), recently premiered during London’s The Posthuman Era Became a Girl, and an altar polyptych titled ‘We Are Water’ by London-based artist Jones, who  presented a solo exhibition, The Hudson River, at Lima Zulu last month.

The Ophelia opening event will also feature another launch of a gesture waves us on, answering our own wave publication by the Berlin-based project V4ULT, including a performance/reading at 7pm and music spun by DJ Ubuntu Diver.
