Newman Festival @ Druskininkai, Jul 3 – 6

6 May 2015

The inaugural Newman art and music festival is happening at the Lithuanian town of Druskininkai, running from July 3 to July 6.

Set in the small spa town—built on the bank of river Nemunas, surrounded by nature, and known for its mineral waters and curative mud—the festival posits itself as an exploration of the clash of human nature with modern technology, analyzing how media “extends and redefines a human being”.

Participating in the festival are, to date, six musical and visual acts, including: Jerry Paper (the 11-dimensional caricatured sonic persona of New York-based musician Lucas Nathan); Canadian and Berlin-based singer, songwriter and producer Dan Bodan; Hype Williams member Dean Blunt; Colombian producer and “pop surrealist” Lucrecia Dalt; Berlin-based duo and Mykki Blanco producer Amnesia Scanner; and Norwegian contemporary artist and musician Lars Holdhus (known as T C F).

Britta Thie + Dan Bodan @ Schirn Kunsthalle, Apr 25

24 April 2015

In light of her upcoming exhibition, Translantics, at Schirn Kunsthalle, artist Britta Thie is doing a performance on Frankfurt’s Night at the Museum with Dan Bodan on April 25.

The Berlin artist will be performing with the French-Canadian musician ahead of the opening of her solo show, Translantics. The Schirn is for the first time presenting art that would not be possible without the internet and digital technologies, and Thie’s exhibition is their first step into the digital art realm.

Thie’s web series, Translantics, will appear in six monthly episodes, starting on April 28 and continuing until September 28. The “digital chamber play embedded into the network” tells the story of three young women living in the globalized, culturally homogenized world of present-day Berlin.

Hotel Moon @ New Theater, Mar 12 – 18

11 March 2015

New Theatre brings a new musical to its stage, titled Hotel Moon and running at the Berlin space from March 12 to March 18.

The now completely sold-out musical play was written by the collaborative American duo Calla Henkel and Max Pitegoff in conjunction with associate editor of Frieze d/e Magazine (and BCR host)  Pablo Larios, and features musical direction by French-Canadian artist Dan Bodan and Trevor Lee Larson of YYAA Recordings, as well as performances by sixteen different artists.

By way of description, the musical only offers this short, abstract text:

And the people,
They say to themselves
They got
Nothing but time here.
Christmastime.
Nothing but time behind ‘em.
Sure, they coulda had more.
So there’s a kind of… restlessness…
