Project Native Informant present DIS + Babak Radboy’s Narrative Devices at Art Basel Hong Kong, Mar 21 -25

23 March 2017

Project Native Informant is presenting DIS and Babak Radboy‘s Narrative Devices at Art Basel Hong Kong, opening March 21 and running to March 25.

The exhibition consists of four videos, each a mini-narrative that reflects on the present; a time that feels ‘incomprehensible’ and ‘unknowable’ to the artists. Co-produced by Iconoclast, the videos feature a glass sculpture in the shape of a phone made by Tilman Hornig, where sentences such as “Imagine a government that serves the people” and “Now imagine the people are assholes” roll across the screen.

Reminiscent of corporate aesthetics, the installation explores the ability to re-imagine your own contemporary, and suggests “fantasy is more influential and effective than reality.”

Shanzhai Biennial @ Project Native Informant, Oct 15 – Nov 15

13 October 2014

For its third round in as many years, Shanzhai Biennial is presenting a massive estate as part of London’s Frieze Art Fair, running concurrently at Frieze and at Project Native Informant from October 15 to November 15.

The New York-based collective, consisting of stylist Avena Gallagher, artist and creative director Babak Radboy and fashion designer Cyril Duval, sees itself as “a multinational brand posing as an art-project posing as a multinational brand posing as a biennial” and for this year’s event, titled Shanzhai Biennial No. 3: 100 Hamilton Terrace, they will attempt to sell a £32,000,000 estate consisting of parallel commercial installations peppered with high-gloss ads.

Removing the last scrap of pretense from what is becoming an increasingly commercialised art market, the collective takes the notion of commercial art to the next level, transforming both the gallery and Frieze space into functioning real estate boutiques designed to “unlock the potential of Frieze as a lifestyle brand”.

TELFAR.net launched today

28 January 2014

After announcing their “extremely normal” collaboration four months ago with a video soundtracked by Future Brown, Telfar Clemens and Babak Radboy launch a “lush” new website for the former’s unisex fashion label, TELFAR, today.

Designed by Radboy and developed by Denis Nazarov, the site aims to contextualise eight years of work in anticipation of the A/W 2014 TELFAR show (see: “surreal retail wonderland”) takeover of the New Museum on February 10.

The event is set to include a “surprise” sculptural component, runway show and a long-form ‘AS SEEN ON TV’ video directed by Radboy with music by Ryan Trecartin.

TELFAR X Future Brown

12 September 2013

In a match made in utopia fashion designer Telfar Clemens and our favourite ‘fake capitalist’ Babak Radboy echo the mainstream fetishism of the day by introducing the forthcoming TELFAR line. It’s a collection of customizable sportswear that they describe as neither conceptual nor practical; “highly polished, eminently accessible, yet stranger than any underground production”.

The backing instrumentals come from a track called ‘Marbles’ by none other than 2020 hyper-stars Future Brown. As a band named after an inorganic colour, its an ideal complement to the creepy grins reminiscent of Shanzhai Biennial‘s Yue Minjun-inspired branding campaign, as well as DIS’ ‘Watermarked I Kenzo Fall 2012′. Mind is blown.
