Independent Games Festival @ IGF Pavilion – San Francisco

28/02/2011 - 04/03/2011

After more than 10 years showcasing some of the most original games in the industry, the Independent Games Festival is back for its 2011 edition next March. Some call it the “Sundance” for game developers, others see it as a the only way of catapulting their careers. And the big studios seek each edition for new talent to hire.

The festival has awarded hundred of thousands of dollars in cash prizes (and brought major exposure and a much higher profile) to a multitude of indie and student game developers who enter.

In total $50,000 in prizes are given out to independent developers in Main Competition and Student Competition categories at the IGF Awards Ceremony, which is one of the highlights of the Game Developers Conference. Last year for example Monaco won the Seumas McNally Grand Prize (20K).

(Heroes of Newerth, Spotlight on Moraxus, winner of the audience award)

As Derek Yu, Bit-Blot says (winner of 2007’s Grand prize with Aquaria) the “IGF stands for a number of things: the celebration and recognition of the achievements of independent developers, the legitimacy of independent gaming, and a high mark that we can all aim for as creative people.”

(Limbo won this year’s Excellence In Visual Art prize after Machinarium last year)

So as we always say, if you happen to be in SF next March…. then find some time in your busy agenda… and have some fun.
