Hervé – ‘Gold (feat Maria Minerva)’

In the next installment in the lead up to Essex producer Joshua Harvey’s upcoming Hervé release Art of Disappearing, out on his own Cheap Thrills label on March 4, aqnb favourite, Maria Minerva (aka Maria Jurr) lends her distinct vocals to ‘Gold’. This time, the Estonian producer doesn’t shy away from letting the meloncholy romanice of her vocals bleed through as Harvey’s downbeat motion privileges a voice that by no fault of her own, is really underrated.

This second album by Hervé follows last year’s debut Pick Me Up, Sort Me Out, Calm Me Down and already features vocals by the likes of Austra’s Katie Stelmanis and Niki and the Dove. Jurr, on the other hand, will be adding to her slew of releases since making a mark not more than two years on the LA-based Not Not Fun. She has another EP, BLESS, coming out on sister label 100% Silk and performs at London’s Shacklewell Arms tonight, February 6 nearly a year since her first live UK performance at the same venue and moving to the US shortly thereafter. **

Off Life #2

19 December 2012

A few days ago the second number of the new UK mag and e-zine “Off Life” made its appearance on-line, again to fulfill our increasing Brit (and international) comic addiction…. and for the pleasure of Bristolians & Londonites.

And because the street press comic mag has quickly become an instant hit for “bd” talent showcasing (from the well known Tom Gauld or Adrian Tomine to other less-established names like Emix Regulus or  Harvey Finch), it’s a great surprise that both bi-monthly numbers are available on-line for our pleasure and delight.

Ok ok, they’re mostly pretty well-known names from the indie scene… for now. But hey, pretty much any artist can submit their work to be published in upcoming numbers (btw, the next issue will be out by mid-Feb 2013 and submissions are open until next month) and thousands of people will be taking notice of your artwork off & on-line.

The arrival of a new zine is always good news, especially if it’s made available for free on the Internet too.

Game City Nights goes on Tour

2 October 2012

Americans have the IGF or PAX … and way too many local & national events for that nerd hobby called gaming, in the UK…. well…  you have Insomnia, or the LGF and then you have something which up until now was too local, too studentish, too…. special to become mainstream. That was up until now, because Nottingham’s famous Game City Nights (an extension of their GameCity festival taking place later on this month) are making their way out into the rest of the UK… and also Ireland!

What started nearly 3 years ago with a monthly exploration of gaming culture has quickly become one of the UK’s referent events for videogame lovers, and the best of all is that many of the talks, debates and nights’ extracts have been continuously uploaded to their youtube channel for everyone to watch. This gaming-must is now prepared to take over the UK as they are bringing their night to 10 venues from mid-November to late February. (Full list of dates & venues on their tour page).
