Nicholas O’Brien presents solo exhibition The Trolley looking at progressive disappearance through game at LIMA, Jan 17 – Feb 28

Nicholas O’Brien presents solo exhibition The Trolley at Amsterdam’s LIMA opening January 17 and running to February 28.

The Trolley  is the third exhibition of Cultural Matter; a series of events and shows which digital arts, its presentation and preservation, with other artists including Harm van den Dorpel, Constant Dullaart and Olia Lialina.  

As described by O’Brien, the exhibition is an ‘essay game artwork’ and “revolves around the progressive disappearance of a mode of public transport in the urban landscape.” As the viewer plays, they are confronted with choices of what to dismantle and continue, reflecting on their role in the outcome.

The artist will be discussing his installation and the politics of a changing public space and infrastructure with Isabelle Arvers on January 17 and Filippo Lorenzin on February 19.

Space Between the Skies @ apexart, Mar 23 – May 14

New York’s apexart space will present a group show Space Between the Skies opening March 23 and running May 14.

Organised by Christopher Manzione who will also show work and including New York-based Nicholas O’Brien —who was interviewed by aqnb about his research-orientated practice last year —the show will transform the physical space of apexart into a multi-virtual realm with several digital and non-digital ‘landscapes’ projected around the room.

The imagery will be made up of video game shots, “…algorithmic collages, documentary footage of Wuhan, China, and dynamically enhanced audio/visual 360-degree responsive forest environments”, according to the press release.

Other artists in the show include Seth Cluett, John Craig Freeman, Ricky Graham and Rachel Rossin.

Opening Times – Digital Art Commissions

Opening Times – a digital art commissioning body whose primary means of encounter and body of work exists online – was launched on June 2, 2014.

The not-for-profit platform launched with a handful of concurrent projects that give evidence to Opening Times’ comprehensive range, including a new commission by artist Ruth Proctor, a research project by writer and artist Nicholas O’Brien and a selection of work from resident artist Nicolas Sassoon, as well as an online reading resource edited by Art Post-Internet curator and writer Karen Archey
