Where the lovers used to meet @ John Martin – London
09/02/2013 @ 8:00 am - 02/03/2013 @ 5:00 pm
freeJohn Martin welcomes Bristolian artist Richard Cartwright for the 5th time, since back in 2003 he presented us with those dreamy landscapes and romantic oils in “Reasons to believe”.
For his upcoming “Where the lovers used to meet”, Richard presents us again with his spiritual and mysterious canvases proposing distant, sometimes impossible locations for us to meet… or to scape to.
He has long believed that a picture requires a melody of colour, light and form evident in his landscapes, nocturnes, nudes and interiors. Working predominantly in pastel – an unusual medium for such large paintings – each piece is characterised by an intense feeling of colour and atmosphere radiating from the careful layering of the medium.
Do lovers keep meeting by the old pond or by the backyard shed? Perhaps a lost motel yes, perhaps a little village rural house, or by the old farm, but unfortunately as the population becomes more and more urban, romantic natural scenes like these feel more like something from the past, or do they?
Opening next Friday @ London’s John Martin, “Where lovers used to meet” looks like a perfect St. Valentine’s day expo, and runs until March 2nd. More info this way.
