Golden Shield by Combo @ Republic Gallery – Paris

French Street artist Combo, who got some headlines on the local press a year ago with his “Tchernobyl attaque“, by basically getting inside the 60km security area around the plant and sticking some posters, is back to his old habits.

In exactly one week  his latest photographic series will be shown @ the central Parisian gallery Republic in the 3rd arrondissement. Historical cartooning, mosaics, homeless street deaths… Combo keeps experimenting with his topics and subjects and for “Golden Shield” the artist is provoking China… or to be more precise… the richest and less-controlled part of it: Hong Kong.

That’s where the artist has traveled to, trying to show the usually censored Google pages on the local building walls, pages that are typically blocked by the national party’s greatest firewall… the Golden Shield.

Combo offers the HK citizens images that were out of reach until then… the Tiananmen Square protests, the recent arrest of the artist Ai Weiwei… a temporary window into the other world. Golden Shield opens next Saturday during the Chinese New Year’s Eve, probably the best date for this kind of exhibition. More info this way.
