How can you exhibit graffiti in an art gallery without being accused of trying to comoditize it? Without accepting that street-art movement has already been institutionalized? Not an easy task… and Jan_Doe 22 is willing to offer us a concrete proposal… an exhibition about graffiti without graffiti… is this possible?

Jane Doe is the name of this exhibition, because it’s a perfect name and fits in perfectly with all descriptions you could imagine. She’s an unknown person, a painting which all of a sudden appears at night over the roof, the shadow that jumps over the fence, present at an abandoned place. Traditionally this name is picked as a last-minute choice when no other information is available and we identify performers with an X.

Three artists are Jane Doe: Dimitri Arnaoudov, Native Maqari & Saeio. Each with an atypical parcours and with a personal vision on how to work on the streets. They’ve all 3 decided to build Jane Doe’s identity.

It’s graffiti which brought these three archaeologists this far and that is precisely what they want us to see. Graffiti isn’t simply an inscription on a support, it’s a way of conceiving the urban space, our cities, divided by different areas, levels. A creative process which can’t be limited to a single final work.
