Crumb, From the Underground to Genesis @ MAM – Paris

I’d love to know what Mr. Crumb thinks about French & especially about Parisian women, probably too skinny for his own female prototype, no big boobs, no big muscled legs or massive butts… they’re hardly noticeable for heaven’s sake!

Although after a couple of decades living in southern France with his family (Aline included, she’s the one who actually pushed to come over here) , he’s probably got used to the paysage…

Fabrice Hergott (MAM’s director) decided to open an exhibition on the American BD legend because apparently the Parisian MAM needs visitors…. otherwise they wouldn’t be financed. Not that Robert Crumb is a big friend of museums but he generally agrees with the “public” and “accessible” part of these, so… why not? He is now half-French after all.

His first retrospective  covering pretty much his 50+ years of comic hyperactivity from his Fritz the Cat & Mr. Natural heroes in 1959 and 1967  to his more recent Sex Obsessions. In fact the whole of the exhibition is organised around these…

Love, hate, women fear, music, his introspection and acid take on our modern world… more than 700 drawings, 200 Underground magazines and the famous documentary “Crumb” by Terry Zwigoff. This is what this exhibition has to offer, and while 8€ isn’t the ideal price (2-4€ would be a wiser choice) we still have to recommend it.
