26 March 2012

Hey hey hey! 4 years after the first “announcement” (or rumour)… guess which American cult magazine finally makes it to the Frenchie land… The Believer! (although for frenchies shall be named “Le Believer”, coss l’article “The” it’s too complicated to translate).

The American literary cabinet of curiosities which was launched back in 2003 by McSweeney’s editions (Dave Eggers) is introducing a singular mix of pop and indie culture to the French readers: Damon Albarn, Zadie Smith, Don Delillo, Laird Hunt…. they tell you what they like, their darkest secrets, dreams and phobias, and then, up to you to decide if you buy.

Each month (although “Le Believer” is quarterly) Nick Hornby will speak about his books, Greil Marcus will give you his latest “Top 10”, and with together with a long list of regular contributors, come the “guest stars”… that go from David Byrne to Daniel Clowes… or Tim & Eric. Who else could condense the cultural appetite and contemporary trends in an timeless way?

The French house responsible for it’s introduction are Inculte Editions, the company born from the ashes of Inculte magazine (sort of The Believer French equivalent from the early 00s), tried without much success to bring their American inspiration to their home-market since 2008. And last year, when they had pretty much given up on this possibility, they find themselves planning the last details of the magazine launch for this month. Lucky them huh? Lucky us!
