The Jungle @ Jonathan Levine – NYC
25/02/2012 @ 7:00 pm - 24/03/2012 @ 5:00 pm
freeNew exhibition for Mr Castillo opening this month in the US, if this time last year Victor was presenting his little “Rebels with a cause” @ LA’s Merry Karnowsky Gallery, this Saturday he’ll drop by Jonathan Levine Gallery around 7pm to talk about the future, the credibility of power structures… and the survival jungle our western societies have transformed into (not that they weren’t already, it’s just now it’s more radical).
For Victor, this is his New York debut, and he surely isn’t afraid after having visited tons of galleries around the world.
The Chilean painter, in an attempt to capture our uncertain and chaotic times (from his cartoony point of view), proposes a set of new works that explore the “law of the jungle” and the age-old story that “man eats man.” No-one better than his colorful little weirdos to represent the current socio-economic world crisis, because if you add to the already scary-enough reality a few spooky children, then you’ll be able to understand the whole picture.
His hollow-eyed children serve as a vehicle to convey ominous narratives of survival, greed and indoctrination. Inspired by vintage animation (and the dark masters like Goya) his paintings easily become theatrical sketches of tragicomic situations.
So for more tragicomedy you only have to be @ JLG this Saturday evening (rrrrrrrrrright after work), if not, you have until late March.
