Pakui Hardware presented solo exhibition Vanilla Eyes at Vienna’s Mumok running from June 4 to October 19, 2016.
Curated by Rainer Fuchs, the show title indicates artificial organs, and contains a pun that highlights the interpenetration of the natural and the artificial, the real and the fictional. The production of synthetic aromas like vanilla is not only a sign of scientific progress but also challenges us to reconsider our established notions of the given and the man-made.
The installation includes a large amount of collected material from cutouts of images selected from NASA digital archive, UV prints on PVC Pentaprint film, silicone, thermoformed Plexiglas and Mini Magic Wand Humidifiers among many other things. The space becomes a kind of laboratory full of allusions to the research and production of future organisms and life forms.
Neringa Černiauskaitė and Ugnius Gelguda’s Pakui Hardware project focuses on already long existent and implemented systems and programs to design nature, with the aim of making their underlying mechanisms transparent.
