Gilbert & George @ White Cube – London

All three of White Cube‘s London galleries have something in common this month… they’re accomplices of a crime… because even if some of those petty thefts may have prescribed… I’m pretty sure Gilbert & George could still be condemned for their latest works and series of robberies: “London Pictures“.

If an impeccably dressed gentleman in his 60s comes to buy some chewing gum or a mars bar comes to your newsagent shop you certainly wouldn’t imagine that one another impeccably dressed gentleman was stealing the newspaper bill, why on earth would they?

Apparently 5 years weren’t enough to steal enough newspapers for their latest piece… 6 were though: 3,712 newspaper sellers’ posters that were then reduced to 292 for this exhibition. The senior naughty couple (and one of the best well-known Brit art couples) are presenting their “survey of modern urban life” as a quadruple exhibition that is part of a 13 gallery world tour.

Firstly in their brand-new Hong Kong division and a week later the 3 UK branches grabbed some of those big headlines.

The always shocking duo deal this time with some of the biggest (if not the only) issues humanity faces each day… with a very urban perspective as all those newspaper bills were lifted from the poor newsagent hardworker-owners of east & north London streets.

A lot of drama, urban drama.. depressing & harsh subjects taken out of a cluedo game … murder, robbery, mystery, death! It’s all true unfortunately, these are the headlines we all wake up with every day…
