HTMlles Festival 2016, Nov 3- 6

1 November 2016

The 12th edition of HTMlles Festival is happening at venues across Montreal, opening November 3 and running to November 6.

Produced and coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the feminist artist-run space Studio XX, the international biennial festival brings together a wide range of artists, activists and scholars who engage with socio-political topics and their relation to the web through a feminist, trans, and gender non-conforming perspective.

Each year, a specific theme is discussed through performances, exhibitions, conferences and workshops, with this one being ‘Terms of Privacy’ and will explore intimacy and politics in relation to transparency.

Some recommendations include:

CTRL + [SELF] : Intimacy, extimacy and control in the age of the overexposure of self group exhibition featuring Amalia UlmanEva + Franco Mattes and Daniela Müller, among others.

A series of video screenings Shadow Stories featuring Sabrina Ratté and Kim Kielhofner, among others.

Sabrina Ratté @ Young Projects Gallery, Oct 6 – Jan 20

6 October 2016

Sabrina Ratté is presenting solo exhibition Lieux-Dits at Los Angeles’ Young Projects Gallery, opening October 6 to January 20, 2017.

Curated by Sharsten Plenge and Paul Young, it is the first US solo show by the Montreal-based artist who’s ongoing video practice generates virtual environments through analogue means. For Lieux-Dits, Ratté takes the French word for unregistered spaces, like regions or villages with no official name, to explore “the nature of the electronic image as physical space, residing in both tangible and virtual expanses.”

The site-specific installation and video environment, created by the artist working between “realms of interference”, will feature works including a sprawling room-sized four-channel installation called ‘Common Areas’, an aluminum print with video augmentation called ‘Immeuble-Villas’ as well as other things.

There will be a catalogue essay written by David Jager and a soundscape composed by ongoing collaborator Roger Tellier-Craig.

See the Young Projects Gallery website for details.**

X+1 @ MACM, Feb 20

17 February 2015

The X + 1 concept project is diving into the world of net art and staying there until 2am, running at Canada’s Musée D’Art Contemporain de Montréal on February 20.

Running from 5pm until 2am on February 20, the Montreal museum will be converted into an all-hands-on-deck net art party. From expositions – three in total: Sophie Calle‘s Pour la dernière et pour la première fois, Simon Starling‘s Métamorphologie and The Forgotten Space  by Allan Sekula and Noël Burch of Série Projections – to performances, DJ sets and guided tours, the night is drawing together a lot of different medium all, in effect, exploring one – the vast world of the internet.

The performances take on the role of networking and exchange activities, creations by artists “transcribed into a single immersive visual experience”. The initiators of the project – Erin Gee, Benoit Palop, Sabrina Ratté and Tristan Stevens – have all invited artists from their own personal networks who have, in turn, invited another (hence the designator X + 1) culminating in performances by Ratté and Roger Tellier-Craig followed by one by Gee.

See the MACM event page for details. **
