Post Colonial Flagship Store @ quartier21, Oct 2 – Nov 23

20 October 2014

Vienna’s quartier21 has opened its Post Colonial Flagship Store (PCFS) exhibition project earlier this month, running at the MuseumsQuartier space from October 2 to November 23.

The exhibition concept (created by Sven Kalden and Georg Klein) takes the notion of colonization and that of consumerism and creates a showcase of “artworks camouflaged as consumer goods” addressing issues of identity, global investment strategies, and the migration of labour to explore dependency and oppression between cultures.

The 16 contributing artists span the globe, each with works that reference the colonial backgrounds of their respective countries. Senegal’s Mansour Ciss Kanakassy, for example, creates an African bank that “supplies the AFRO as a counterpart to the EURO” while Mexico’s Israel Martinez presents his soundtrack to the “Mexican Drug War” and its problematic history with the USA, and Argentina’s Mario Asef focuses in on present-day colonization “by means of the Argentine ant” that has reached and conquered the shores of Europe.

Connecting Sound Etc. @ quartier21, Jun 4 – Aug 24

29 May 2014

Vienna’s quartier21 will be hosting the Connecting Sound Etc. Cable Works, Cable Sounds, Cables Everywhere exhibition, running from June 4 to August 24.

The exhibition, curated by Georg Weckwerth and running as part of the MQ Summer of Sounds, brings together installations, interventions, and contextual works to give insight into the spectrum of artistic interpretations and pragmatic functions of cables as connecting elements.

Along with the works, the exhibition will feature a slew of performances, lectures, presentations and workshops that will go deep into the examination of cables as conductors of light, sound, movement, and data.
