The Young London 2018 & its Friday Lates series at v22 Silvertown Studios presents the city’s emerging talent, Sep 21 – Nov 4

The Young London 2018 group exhibition is on at London’s v22 Silvertown Studios, running September 21 to November 4.

Curated by Rowan Geddis, the show is the fourth edition of an ongoing large-scale exhibition series featuring recent works by the city’s emerging artists. There are 19 taking part this year, including Sebastian Jefford, Benjamin Orlow, Luke Overin, Harriet Rickard, Eleanor Sikorski, Mathew Parkin, Freddy Tuppen and more, as well as Carl Gent, whom AQNB interviewed recently in conjunction with their ‘fals tru luvvers a’shore an H’agiographic dysphonia’ contribution.

Along with the exhibition — that also includes commissioned and site-specific works — there is a weekly series of after-hours events, called Friday Lates, where artists are encouraged to elaborate on and exchange ideas around their work with visitors in a more intimate setting.**

Sorry About Last Night @ Art Sheffield 2016, May 6 – Jun 6

The Sorry About Last Night group exhibition is on at Sheffield’s The Washington Pub, opening May 6 and running to June 6.

Presented by (It’s all) Tropical art space, the event is running alongside the Art Sheffield 2016 and features work by Claire Boyd, Laura Yuile, Lindsey Mendick, Liv Fontaine, Luke Overin, Mathew Parkin, Millington Marriott and Victoria Fornieles among others.

The multidisciplinary show celebrates work birthed from bad life choices, and is placed between the shiny optimism of getting ready before a night out and the consequent hangover the next day. In sharing truths and slurring emotions the evening seeks what the press release calls “drunken inspirations, drinking to forget, passionate pub debates, pointless fights with friends, loss of inhibitions, misguided decisions, hungover regrets, next day apologies, and one too many Jaegerbombs [sic].”

A confessional performance/public meltdown by Self Esteem (Rebecca Taylor of Slow Club) will commence at on the evening of May 6, with Karaoke running into the late hours.

Mathew Parkin is presenting solo show I believe in you at London’s IMT Gallery, opening April 7 and running May 15.

At the core of the exhibition is a film following a pilgrimage to see a show of Felix Gonzalez-Torres in Belfast. The movie, according to the show’s text, is a sincere attempt to articulate a personal language of desire and intimacy. It combines footage from webcam and iPhone.

The artist, who is interested in coming in to contact with what he sees and likes the look of, will also include a series of interventions, such as providing lube, and tea and coffee, as the month progresses to compliment the film. In this respect then the viewers will become users rather than only spectators and Parkin will continue his exploration of care, transmittance and articulation of experience as a surface —this time the surface acting as the exhibition structure itself.

There will be accompanying music by Simon Boase in a work titled ‘The Punishment of Luxury’.
