Man began with… @ Cleopatra’s, Sep 6 – Oct 20

9 September 2014

Cleopatra’s gallery space is hostingĀ Man began with the strangeness of his own humanity, a three-person exhibition running at the Greenpoint, Brooklyn space from September 6 to October 20.

Featuring artists working in distinctly divergent mediums and styles, the show begins with the words of French philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy‘s essay ‘Painting in the Grotto’, from which it takes its title. Painting is presented as discovery, the discovery of a “self outside of self”: “Painting paints this surprise. This surprise is painting.”

Though not all are physically working with paint, all three artists are painting surprise, exposing something of the condition in which humans find themselves. Jacob Ciocci‘s videos poke fun at modern culture and the ubiquitous presence of the internetĀ both stylistically and thematically, Lucky DeBellevue‘s works sculpt abstract images out of women’s handicraft materials, and Monique Mouton‘s deceptively still paintings work to tell a slow story.
