The Why Is Everybody Being So Nice? programme is on at Amsterdam’s De Appel, running April 11 to 15.
Organized by the De Appel’s Curatorial Programme 2016-17 (Mira Asriningtyas, Lucrezia Calabrò Visconti, Mateo Chacon-Pino, Kati Ilves, Shona Mei Findlay, Fadwa Naamna), the four-day event will be host to a number of panel discussions, workshops, screenings and performances that will explore “moments of friction between ethics and etiquette in the knowledge economy.”
The title takes its inspiration from Martha Rosler’s recent essay in e-flux, also called ‘Why Are People Being So Nice?‘ where she investigates ‘niceness’ and how it “speaks to a demand, in neoliberal terms, for the wholesale invention, performance, and perpetual grooming of a transactional self.”
Among the large line-up of contributors include Apparatus 22, Dorota Gawęda & Eglė Kulbokaitė, Young Girl Reading Group, Binna Choi, Xenia Kalpaktsoglou, Gergő Horváth, Laura Wiedijk and director of documenta 14, Hendrik Folkerts, among many others.
The programme will end with ‘The Night of Exhaustion and Exuberance;’ a collective sleepover that will explore ‘collective sleeping’ as a gesture of resistance.
