Cybernetic Serendipity @ ICA, Oct 14 – Nov 30

21 October 2014

The landmark 1968 exhibition Cybernetic Serendipity is getting a renaissance at ICA‘s Fox Reading Room from October 14 to November 30.

The Jasia Reichardt-curated and Franciszka Themerson-designed group show – one of the first UK exhibitions to explore the relationship between art and new technology – is being celebrated in the London art space with a display of documents, press reviews, invitation cards, installation photographs and publications featured in the original 60s exhibition, which featured over 130 contributing artists in its original incarnation, including mathematicians, poets, composers and engineers.

Close to five decades later, at a time when living outside the internet or computer culture seems virtually impossible, this future-thinking exhibition offers a look at the historical origins of modern-day culture. To celebrate, the ICA has organised a series of events to run along the exhibition’s re-presentation, including a reading and discussion titled TEXT2SPEECH: Contemporary Art (Theory) that will take on Etan Ilfeld’s Contemporary Art and Cybernetics: Waves of Cybernetic Discourse within Conceptual, Video and New Media Art (available here) on October 22 and a talk with Jasia Reichardt herself on November 14.
