NEWD Art Show @ The 1896, Jun 6 – 7

5 June 2015

NEWD Art Show is back for another round, taking over Brooklyn’s The 1896 this weekend.

The art show brings together a stacked list of local curatorial voices—including artist-run galleries, collectives, project spaces, and nonprofits—and some experimental programming, including talks focusing on modern economics of the art world.

This year’s exhibitors include, amongst others, a handful of galleries from Brooklyn, like American Medium, Signal, and Sardine,  as well as about 50 international artists, including Ann Hirsch, Jaimie Warren, Harm van den Dorpel, Hannah Lees, and Brian Khek.

Brian Khek @ Levy Delval, Jun 4 – Jul 4

3 June 2015

Brian Khek opens up a new solo show called Harmonizing with Exhaustion at Brussels’s Levy Delval, running from June 4 to July 4.

The Chicago-born (and based) artist has a history with consumerism. His work has repeatedly exploited and exposed the consumer cultures that surround him, participating in the 89+ panel ‘Branding’ and contributing works to shows with titles like Brand Innovations for Ubiquitous Authorship and Personal Belongings.

For his latest show at Levy Deval, Khek presents a press release in the form of a travelogue, with a paragraph introducing the itinerary. Perhaps the materials mentioned—a blue pen, xeroxed essays, 13¢, iron—hint to the materials that we will see in the Khek’s show; he has a way of including the unusual (rotting bananas, anyone) in this installations. Then again, maybe not.

Brian Khek @ American Medium, Feb 7 – 9

7 February 2014

Brian Khek is presenting his first New York solo exhibition, Sister Cities, at American Medium, running February 7 to 9.

The Miami Dutch (nee No New Info) member exhibited with the “corps collectif of self-evasive characters” at the Institute Bianche group show at London’s Library+ last year, while taking part in Hans Ulrich Obrist and Simon Castets’ 89plus and recently collaborating with Bea Fremderman and Micah Schippa on Definitely Living Likely Cognitive.

The Chicago artist’s practice works in exploiting relationships surrounding globalized consumer cultures, which the following Sister Cities blurb certainly points to:

“We grew wheat and hunted to survive. Then roads, places, and skills followed. Now the community we conceived needs something from us, more than a cup of sugar or your Wi-Fi password. They are taking back their land, customs, and concepts. This is a codependence not between people but of the city and the city’s Name.”
