London’s vanishing queer spaces @ BFI National Archive, Aug 12

11 August 2015

BFI National Archive cinema is presenting rarely-soon footage and a panel discussion concerning London’s LGBT communities, titled London’s vanishing queer spaces and taking place on August 12.

Working from the notions of visibility and erasure, BFI National Archive curator Simon McCallum will present rarely-seen footage of London’s LGBT communities, including a recently rediscovered record of 60s drag at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern and Derek Jarman’s videotape tour of long-gone club Benjy’s.

Following the screenings, McCallum will be joined onstage to reflect on the footage and discuss future directions with writer and historian Justin Bengry, archivist and DJ Tamsin Bookey, and critic Ben Walters, chaired by director and novelist Neil Bartlett.
