Badlands

10 April 2011

The Taiwanese-born Canadian raised Elvis just released his debut solo LP late last month, and we’re already prepared to add it to our tiny list of 2011 unmissable albums.

Dirty Beaches is Alex Zhang Hungtai who’s managed to pull out an atmospheric and cinematic album that could easily disappear in the 1950s & 60s long list of rock soundtracks… a new trend for the indie scene to drink from?

Badlads was released under Zoo and you can listen to the whole album (before you buy it obviously) on their soundcloud page. Only 7 songs, but you need no more for a nostalgic breakout. “I think Dirty Beaches’ stuff works because it’s trying to recall a psychological landscape from the past. It has that punk flyer ‘photocopy of a photocopy’ feel. That works, but it’s not something I would want to keep doing if labels could give me more funding.” They will Alex; they will.
