‘Absinthe’ SADE LA

Chris Lux @ SADE LA, Sep 18 – Oct 23

16 September 2016

Chris Lux is presenting solo exhibition Absinthe at Los Angeles’ SADE LA, opening September 18 and running to October 23.

The show’s press release comes accompanied by an artist statement, where the San Francisco-based artist expounds on his work with historical texts and ultimate failure to persuade viewers into “seemingly faraway, and unknowable pasts”.

The highly referential figurative paintings exhibited in immersive installations are an attempt at convincing viewers of past worlds like the lives of Saints found in The Golden Legend (1260-1450), and the atmospheres of the Ming era novel in The Golden Lotus (1610).

In referencing a range of periods and styles in this latest exhibition, Lux draws on biography, Borges, the Surrealists, and Symbolism, as well Toulouse Lautrec’s advertising posters among other things to produce paintings that are here introduced by a poem written by Ethan Mitchell in response:

“There are many ways to escape;
across the field,
by climbing a tree,
or through the window.

Leave limbs in the world of green wakes,
phases and strips
of rain returning
quarter by quarter.”**
