22 January 2015

Nicolas Ceccaldi is opening his first solo exhibition, titled Nightmare Factory at Mathew Gallery, where it will run from January 22 to February 28.

The Montreal-born and Berlin-based artist is introducing his most recent work to the public with works hanging down into the space from the gallery’s ceiling.

Taking Newton’s gravitational laws of physics and the psychological condition of cognitive dissonance as its points of inspiration and exploration, the exhibition examines the encounter of these laws with those of the non-physical realm.

Villa Design Group @ Mathew Gallery, Jan 8 – Feb 22

7 January 2015

Mathew Gallery is welcoming Villa Design Group for a retrospective-like show titled One Blow In Anger (Evidence 2011-2014) and running at the NYC space from its opening night on January 8 through to February 22.

The show at Mathew NYC comes as the first presentation by the design trio – made up of Than Hussein Clark, James Connick and William Joys – and features a range of photographic works, new sculptural pieces, and hand-drafted technical drawings.

Following in the vein of their absurd(ly good) VDG Manifesto in the SALT. Manifesto issue, the design group “pictures the scene of collaboration not as the site of collegiate bonhomie, but psychosis”, and the archival exhibition is introduced “not as the site of potential, but the grounds for murder”.

See the Mathew Gallery website for images from VDG’s archives. **

Amy Yao @ Mathew Gallery, Oct 23 – Nov 22

22 October 2014

Mathew Gallery is hosting a solo exhibition by American artist Amy Yao titled Boom Time Ecosystems and running at the Berlin space from October 23 to November 22.

The show consists of a new photographic series featuring sites of production and empty spaces adorned with ‘cutesy icons’ meant to foreshadow or hint at the insatiable consumerism that pushes the transformation of these sites from raw, unrealized spaces to ones that will freely facilitate the flow of capital.

An eroded set of marble steps truncates the gallery at its center, and the entire exhibition comes together as an empty shell of itself, echoing the near-past and the near-future simultaneously and in forms not dissimilar to Yao’s previous exhibitions, including the ladders in her show at Ditch Projects last year.

Berlin Community Radio new website launch

19 August 2014

Germany’s hottest community radio station, Berlin Community Radio, celebrates the launch of its new website this month.

Nearing a year since its official radio show launch, BCR has developed a solid platform with a steady stream of diverse content filling in the live schedule. From experimental noise on Noisekölln, to slick mixes on Berlin artist Heatsick’s self-titled show, to the latest tunes from Berlin record label Blackest Ever Black, BCR takes its music seriously.

No Fear of Pop joins the line-up with some future-thinking pop, as does Ilja Karilampi with a weekly music/noise segment. But BCR’s range extends past music, with a bi-weekly feminist panel called HYSTEREO, a segment by online publishing house General Fine Arts, and one by Berlin-based art space Mathew Gallery, among many others.

The launch of the new website comes together with the launch of the BCR Zine, a round-up of some of the station’s favorites by the various contributors, including Earworm with its hosts’ favorite tracks of the week.

See the BCR website for details. **

Bouvier’s Room @ Mathew Gallery, Aug 14 – Sep 29

14 August 2014

Mathew Gallery is hosting fashion-meet-art exhibition Bouvier’s Bedroom at its West Berlin location from August 14 to September 29.

The Berlin gallery has teamed up with curator Matthew Linde of Australian avant-garde fashion collective Center for Style (Highlights) to transform the art space into the “dilapitated walk-in wardrobe of a fictional aged socialite”.

The hangers of the fictional Ms. Bouvier will be filled with a selection of eight modern Australian labels, including the nomadic unisex label and collaborative art project ffiXXed and the gender-bending, post-apocalyptic romance of Eckhaus Latta. Other labels to join the line-up are H.B. Peace, Laura Fanning, Rare Candy, Jesse Kiely, Martine Rose and Nhu Duong.

Today’s opening night performance will be with artist Anna-Sophie Berger and Matthew Linde.

See the Mathew Gallery exhibition page for details. **
