Manifesta 10 in St. Petersburg, Jun 28 – Oct 31

26 June 2014

The 10th edition of the biennial Manifesta European Biennial of Contemporary Art will be taking place at The State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg from June 28 to October 31.

The roving pan-European biennale will explore St. Petersburg’s complicated relationship with the West and with Europe at large, continuing its examination of the new social, cultural and political realities of a post-Cold War Europe.

Manifesta 10 will feature a slew of established artists, including Marlene Dumas, Jeremy Deller, and Maria Lassnig, as well as emerging ones from across Europe and Russia in particular. However, one big local name for the festival, art platform Chto Delat?, has recently withdrawn from the biennale in solidarity with the Peace March in Moscow and in protest against Russia’s censorship policies.

Slavs and Tatars, on the other hand, will be taking a more disruptive approach via ideas of “Soviet Orientalism” through the “imperial march of the alphabets” and transliteration as “language in drag” with their The Tranny Tease lecture performance on June 28.

See the Manifesta 10 programme for details. **
