The absent abyss between the living + the death in Fin Simonetti’s LIFEMORTS at Interstate Projects, Nov 10 – Dec 17

8 November 2017

Fin Simonetti is presenting solo exhibition LIFEMORTS at New York’s Interstate Projects, opening November 10 and running to December 17.

There is no indication or press release as to what the show will be, but the New York-based artist often works across mediums in sculpture, drawing, video, performance and is also a sound artist, where her music can be found here.

Her work often pits itself between extremes and emotions; polarized between agony and ecstasy, violence and care, ambiguous and coherent to unpick power structure, domination and oppression and its effect on the body.

You can view documentation from a recent solo exhibition IS PATH WARM? at North Little Rock’s Good Weather, which opened in June.

Visit the Interstate Projects website for details.**

The Center for Experimental Lectures presents Devin Kenny and Jason Hirata at Interstate Projects, Jun 11

7 June 2017

The Center for Experimental Lectures presents Devin Kenny and Jason Hirata at New York’s Interstate Projects on June 11.

Both artists will present new lecture based-performances; Kenny’s will focus  on “Black/American culture before and after telecommunication technologies in connection with legacies of the African diaspora” and Hirata’s will look at the “spectacle of the war machine through their manifestations in nutritional and culinary bureaucracies and material histories”

The Center for Experimental Lectures was set up in 2011 by Gordon Hall to provide a platform dedicated solely to the medium of the lecture.

U:L:O II @ Interstate Projects, Jul 14 – 31

11 July 2016

The  U:L:O group exhibition is on at New York’s Interstate Projects, opening July 14 and running to July 31.

The gathering sees Interstate invite three curators or curatorial project spaces to organise individual shows in the ‘Upper’, ‘Lower’, and ‘Outside’ of their space.

For U:L:O II, invited curators are London/ Vienna project space, Jupiter Woods who bring artists Corinna HelenelundLydia Ourahmane and Harry Sanderson with the title that a body knows regardless; Nichole Caruso and artists Kristen Jensen and Alina Tenser for Something Bright, Then Holes, and Young Adults, introduced by Al Bedell and featuring several artists including Clark Filo and Borna Sammak whose Town Crier solo exhibition at American Medium aqnb reviewed last month.

Each section comes with its own text —one a Dear Diary story and the other two more conventional press releases, suggesting that there is a looser structure within the tighter plan and that each curator/s will respond to the specificity of their allotted part and its architecture.

See the Interstate Projects website for further details.**

Priscilla Jeong + Rob Chavasse @ Interstate Projects, Apr 29 – Jun 5

27 April 2016

Priscilla Jeong and Rob Chavasse are presenting parallel solo exhibitions at New York’s Insterstate Projects, opening April 29 and running to June 5.

New York-based artist Jeong’s show consists a sculptural installation in the form of a ‘suspended maze’ made from moulds of captured tears and sugar called Lash Blast x 2% Flourish. Its press announcement comes accompanied by an abstract, poetic text skirting a theme of affect in objects: “knockoff ysl cries, detained by customs, begging for clearance.”

London-based Chavasse is showing a single-channel projection called The doldroms, a video constructed from phone footage and situated in a region of the Atlantic Ocean called ‘the Doldrums’ known for its unpredictable weather, as well as a word that refers to a state of malaise and stagnation.

See the Interstate Projects website for details.**

Derek Frech + Rasmus Myrup @ Interstate Projects, Nov 13 – Dec 20

12 November 2015

Derek Frech and Rasmus Myrup are presenting their respective exhibitions, Counter Measures and I, Scavenger of Carcasses at New York’s Interstate Projects, opening November 13 and running to December 20.

Drawing on installation, video and sculptural practices, Frech will interrogate the conflation of wireless technology, surveillance, communication and censorship. The artist has installed an electromagnetic pulse device (EMP) inside the gallery with the potential to be switched on at any time in order to create a space of complete radio silence.

Information on Lond0n-based Danish artist Myrup, on the other hand, comes in the form of a photo of a vulture overlaid with a clay tablet featuring the Nippur map, the oldest one ever found, as well as an image of an illuminated manuscript amended with the press release (see below). The piece that mimics The Book of Hours ends with the line, “I am Scavenger of Carcasses, Eater of the Past, living off of broken lives that may live once more.”

See the Interstate Projects website for details.**

Huw Lemmey + McKenzie Wark @ Interstate Projects, May 15

12 May 2015

Huw Lemmey and McKenzie Wark will be launching Lemmey’s first book, titled Chubz – The Demonization of My Working Arse By Spitzenprodukte, at New York’s Interstate Projects on May 15.

Lemmey—aka Spitzenprodukte—has penned a work of fan fiction that follows Andy “Chubz” Wilson, just another NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) through his summer of chilling, dick sucking, and general fucking off. Eventually he meets a leftie journalist and “cute crypto-twink” Owen on Grindr: “Whilst Owen battles poppers-mad Prime Minister Nigel “Nige” Farage, our cock-hungry comrade wages his own “ass” war, and is left wondering: just what exactly is it he’s fighting for? Socialism? Barbarism? Or just cheap kicks?”

The comic blend of sex and politics are Lemmey’s trademark, seen in previous works like Digital Dark Spaces” and “Devastation in Meatspace” (both in The New Inquiry). He is joined on Friday by McKenzie Wark, author of A Hacker Manifesto and Gamer Theory, and professor at the New School for Social Research and Eugene Lang College in New York City.
