Why does Gregor never rings?
10/10/2012 @ 8:00 am - 14/10/2012 @ 5:00 pm
freeLaure Prouvost‘s The Wanderer is back to MOT International in its 5th sequence, bringing the viewer into an underground bunker, reminiscent of the cold war era, where the characters and their surrounding environment are literally turned upside down. With a heightened sense of awareness and a constantly ringing telephone, the characters converse in a faux military dialogue. Their objective is to locate Gregor, the film’s elusive protagonist.
Between fragmented exchanges and tangled mappings the characters are lost in an over-communicative mix of past and present, reality and falsehood….
This is her second exhibition @ MOT and continues Laure’s mini-tour of this full-length feature film and seven gallery installations of that free & fictional adaptation of Kafka’s text.
The film been developed from an intuitive German to English translation by Rory MacBeth. Between the two languages the original narrative becomes transformed, if not lost, in its translation. Throughout The Wanderer Prouvost’s protagonists, undergo a series of increasingly bizarre experiences, in which reality disintegrates around them. Combining everyday footage with staged interludes, the film’s plot is constantly undermined by the disparate audio and visual elements with which it is juxtaposed.
Visitors should dive into all those personal stories, heightened by Laure’s use of handheld cameras and whispered voiceovers, but their ability to piece together narrative elements will be challenged. A highly “rich” narrative experience which opened last Wednesday and will be exhibited until Nov. 10th. A month of surreal paranoia open @ MOT International, more info this way.
