The Next Life’s on Me @ White Cube – London
09/11/2012 @ 6:00 pm - 22/12/2012 @ 5:00 pmfree
And just like that White Cube @ Hoxton Saquare is gone. What over a decade ago was seen as one of the most successful and influential east London galleries will be closing its doors by the end of next month, but not without showcasing a last one!
If Bermondsey is the new Hoxton and the increasing popularity of this WC space is overshadowing the gallery brand 2-floor space near Old Street, then Jay Jopling has probably made his maths right but we’ll still miss what some of us considered our local gallery for several years.
No time for concessions or nostalgic recaps, business moves fast and the “last one” @ Hoxton is ready to open its doors this Friday presenting new works by artist and writer Harland Miller. 2 new series of works: a selection of his famous paintings based on the marbled covers of vintage Penguin poetry books as well as a group of new figurative paintings …
In “The Next Life’s On Me” we’ll get to see again his highly recognisable & imaginary Penguin paperbacks with his new series of figurative paintings, Miller adopts a tangential approach to his subject matter in works that deal with the cult of personality. Filmic in feel, these paintings have developed out of the artist’s interest in heterogenous printed ephemera from the 1970s.
A last one to salute one of the most influential London galleries une dernière… and to enjoy the Bourbon taste of “The Next Life’s On Me” and many more short stories that have helped Miller, much like the White Cube, reinvent himself. More info on the exhibition this way.
